At Kids Care Dental & Orthodontics, we firmly believe that every kid deserves a positive dental experience. For children with special needs, dental care can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially when it comes to sensory sensitivities, anxiety, or changes to routine. With the right prep and support, dental care can become more comfortable and even empowering for both kids and parents.

Building Predictable Routines at Home

Consistency can make a big difference for kids with special needs. Establishing a routine around brushing and flossing can reduce anxiety and build confidence over time. For in-depth tips and guidance, we cover this more in our blog: How to Make Brushing Fun for Kids: Tips That Actually Work.

If your kiddo needs a little extra help in learning proper technique, we also offer brushing and flossing lessons and are happy to teach children of all ages and needs.

To summarize some of these tips and get started at home:

  • Try using visual schedules or timers to show when brushing starts and ends
  • Play their favorite song during brushing to make the routine more enjoyable and predictable
  • Brush at the same time each day to help build a consistent routine

Over time, these small habits can make daily dental care feel more familiar and manageable.

Make Brushing More Sensory-Friendly

Kids with special needs can experience sensory input differently. Adjusting brushing and flossing routines to accommodate their preferences can make dental care more comfortable and even enjoyable.

Consider trying:

  • Different toothbrush options, like soft-bristle, silicone, manual vs. electric
  • Unflavored or mildly flavored toothpaste if mint is overwhelming
  • Adjusting the temperature of the water

How to Help Your Kid Prepare for the Dentist

One of the best ways to help your kiddo feel comfortable at the dentist is by letting them know what to expect before the appointment. Predictability helps many children with special needs feel safe and in control, especially in new or unfamiliar environments.

We’ve created a simple visual guide that walks through each step of the visit—from checking in to saying goodbye—so you and your child can review it together before coming in.

Other helpful tips:

  • Watching videos or reading books about going to the dentist
  • Practicing opening mouth or counting teeth at home
  • Talking through each step
  • Bringing a comfort item or fidget toy (we also provide these during our sensory hours!)

Sensory Hours at Kids Care Dental

All Kids Care Dental & Orthodontics offices offer dedicated Sensory Hours, every weekday from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

During this time, we adjust our environment to create a more soothing, inclusive space that helps every child feel safe and supported.

What to expect during Sensory Hours

Our Sensory Hours are designed to make visits as peaceful as possible, for both kids and parents. During Sensory Hours, you can expect:

A quiet atmosphere: We limit noise and patient volume to reduce sensory overload

Dimmed lights: Softer lighting creates a more relaxing environment

Fidget toys: Available to help kids stay relaxed and engaged

An inclusive space: Our team will provide a social story of the visit to walk the child through the experience

If your kiddo would benefit from a quieter, slower-paced visit, schedule your appointment during our Sensory Hours (8:30 a.m.–10:30 a.m.) at any Kids Care Dental & Orthodontics location.
